1 tablespoon butter

1/2 teaspoon red curry paste

Harvest-Stuff ed Acorn Squash

Ingredients:

1 lb Ground Beef

3 Acorn squash

5 tbsps Extra virgin olive oil

Kosher salt to taste

Freshly ground black pepper to taste from The Spice House

1 1/2 cups Israeli couscous (can substitute rice, quinoa, or farro, if desired)

3/4 cup Apple cider

Fresh rosemary (2 sprigs, finely chopped)

3/4 Yellow onion (chopped)

Celery (2 stalks, chopped)

2 cups Spinach (chopped)

2 cloves Garlic (minced)

1 tbsp Fresh rosemary (chopped)

Bread Crumbs:

2 tbsps Butter

1 tbsp Rosemary (finely chopped)

1/2 cup Panko bread crumbs

Instructions:

1. Preheat oven to 425°. Cut each acorn squash in half (top to bottom). Use a spoon to remove the seeds. Brush all over with 2 tablespoons olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast until tender, 40-45 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, make Israeli couscous: in a medium saucepan, toast the couscous with 1 tablespoon of olive oil for 5 minutes, stirring often. Once toasted, combine couscous with ¾ cup of apple cider and 1 cup of boiling water. Bring to a simmer and cook, stirring occasionally, until liquid is evaporated and couscous is tender, 15-20 minutes.

3. Meanwhile, make filling: in a large skillet over medium heat, heat remaining oil. Add Laura’s Lean ground beef and cook, breaking up with a wooden spoon and stirring occasionally until browned and cooked through, 5 minutes. Remove ground beef with a slotted spoon onto a papertowel lined plate.

4. Drain most fat from the skillet, then add 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Add onion and celery and cook until soft, 5-6 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Add garlic and chopped rosemary and cook until fragrant for 1 more minute.

5. Add spinach and cook, stirring frequently. Add remaining 2 tablespoons cider after 4 minutes of cooking, then cook 4 minutes more, or until spinach is tender.

6. Meanwhile, make rosemary browned butter breadcrumbs. Heat a cast iron skillet over medium heat and add the butter and finely chopped rosemary. Melt butter over medium heat until lightly browned (butter will froth and foam). Remove from the stove, whisk butter and rosemary for 20 seconds, and then stir the panko bread crumbs into the butter and rosemary.

7. Add cooked couscous and Laura’s Lean ground beef to skillet with vegetable filling and stir to combine. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Divide mixture among the 6 squash halves and then top each half with ? of the rosemary bread crumbs. Switch oven to broil and broil until tops are golden and filling is warmed, 2 to 3 minutes.

Aromatic Cocktail and Mocktail Recipes

Spiced Apple Old Fashioned

Ingredients:

2 oz bourbon

1/2 oz spiced apple syrup (made by infusing apple cider with The Spice House cinnamon sticks and cloves)

Our most helpful tip is to start small; before taking the big trip up or down, practice just opening the elevator door and walking in and out. Positive verbal affirmations and treats can go a long way in helping your pup adjust. Being mindful of high traffic times will also aid your training and keep the environment low-stakes for all involved.

COMMUNICATION WITH BUILDING MANAGEMENT

Before you secure a brand-new apartment, it’s important to have a conversation with a property manager or leasing consultant about living with a pet, including your dog’s breed and information about building rules and fees associated. “Tuesdays on the Terrace” will return to the Museum of Contemporary Art this summer! Starting on June 7th and running through August 31st, the Anne and John Kern Terrace Garden will come alive every Tuesday with the sounds of sultry jazz wafting over the city.

ABOUT

The evenings on the Terrace are hosted by Al Carter-Bey of WDCB 90.9 FM and Richton Guy Thomas of WHPK 88.5 FM, and will always feature two sets of live music kicking off at 5:30 PM each week in a safe, socially distant outdoor environment. A harmonious celebration of the international jazz community, these lively concerts will have you feeling right at home in Chicago’s Gold Coast.

This musical and magical night under the stars offers free admission. There are no pre-reserved seating options available, but you can reserve free tickets starting on May 25th at noon. Walk-up tickets are always available, and seats are made accessible on a first-come, first-served basis. Light refreshments and a full bar with cold beverages, wine, and cocktails will be on tap to whet the appetite.

Whether this Tuesday night concert is your first time to the MCA – or you’ve lost count – it’s a great opportunity to add on a leisurely stroll through the museum beforehand. Multiple exhibitions are on display throughout the summer, including Alfredo Jaar: The Structure of Images, Bani Abidi: The Man Who Talked Until He Disappeared, and Firelei Baez. This hugely popular festival highlights local retailers and artists, with two music stages programmed by local venues The Empty Bottle and Subterranean. Do Division can be done as a family affair as well – two whole blocks are devoted to Family Fun Fest, complete with petting zoos, bounce houses and face painting. 100% of Family Fun Fest proceeds benefit local elementary schools.

A historical self-guided garden walk is part of the festivities and features over 50 gardens in full bloom throughout the neighborhood. Many of the gardens are private or semi-private, and as such are only viewable during the Art Fair. Blue Door Kitchen and Garden is a charming farm-to-table restaurant in the Gold Coast. Their patio feels like sitting in your best friend’s backyard in the summer months and is a reprieve from the bustling Elm Street. Blue Door Kitchen is located within the carriage house of Biggs Mansion, built just three years after the Great Chicago Fire. This quaint location suits the restaurant’s elevated southern cooking. Popular menu items include their Shrimp and Grits, Buttermilk fried chicken (accompanied with Belgian waffles if you’re dining for Brunch), and their staple farm sides — house-made mashed potatoes, mac ‘n cheese with added chicken, shrimp, or andouille sausage, and pecan cornbread.

Since 1996, Le Colonial has been serving delicious French-Vietnamese cuisine with impeccable service. They recently moved locations but stayed within the Gold Coast. TZUCO – 720 N STATE ST

Topping Chicago’s Best Restaurant lists and earning a Michelin Bib Gourmand distinction in 2021, Tzuco’s chef Carlos Gaytán serves up creative Mexican dishes in this inspired Gold Coast restaurant. The chef’s training in French haute cuisine is infused in each dish, including a French Onion soup with Poblano peppers. Standout dishes include their Cochinita Pibil — braised pork ribs prepared with adobo marinade served with black bean puree, pickled red onions, habanero salsa, and corn tortillas. The space is warm and inviting, featuring tall bookshelves filled with unique flora and dried grasses encased in glass, which connect the Chicago locale to the chef’s hometown of Huitzuco in Guerrero, Mexico. SOMERSET — 1112 N STATE ST

Somerset provides a blend of traditional and contemporary tastes and styles, much like the Gold Coast neighborhood where it’s located. In the Viceroy hotel (a modern-meets-historic building), Somerset presents classic American dishes that satisfy even the pickiest eaters every time. For an indulgent order — Somerset’s Beef Wellington is made with decadent Wagyu beef and black truffle. Looking for something on the lighter side? TOUR THE HISTORIC CHARNLEY-PERSKY MANSION OF CHICAGO’S GOLD COAST

As fall arrives in Chicago with changing colors and cooler temps, the timeless beauty of the Gold Coast becomes even more enchanting. Grabbing a latte while sightseeing on Dearborn with leaves crunching under your boots is a perfect option for autumnal cardio.

This charming stretch of Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood is a properly designated Historic District and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The history of the neighborhood, however, dates back to the early 1800’s. Originally known as the Astor Street District, it was named after John Jacob Astor, one of the wealthiest men in 19th century America. This association drew the interest of other influential families in town, who then flocked to the area to build their homes.

The scenery is still mansions and row houses as far as the eye can see, with a few sparkling high rises dotted in between. Aesthetically speaking, it’s a wonder that the unique Charnley-Persky mansion even has an address here. Its minimalist design and boxy structure are a departure from the ornate landscape on Astor Street. Yet, keeping with the Gold Coast theme of making fabulous first impressions, it certainly stands out from the crowd.

LOUIS SULLIVAN, FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT, AND THE CHARNLEY-PERSKY HOUSE MUSEUM

If you’ve spent any time in Chicago, you’ve heard the names Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright in more than one conversation. Both Sullivan and Wright are hailed as local celebrities and considered some of the most prolific architects in US history. What makes the Charnley-Persky Mansion even more intriguing is the fact that Wright delivered on this project at the beginning of his career, while working as an apprentice with Adler & Sullivan.

When designing Charnley, Sullivan and Wright famously eschewed the architecture norms of the Victorian period, choosing instead to incorporate more abstract motifs. This undoubtedly paved the way towards a new architectural era. No small feat. Did we mention Wright was only 21 at the time?

Should you decide to head down Astor Street to check out this mansion-turned-museum, you will no doubt see the trademark finishing touches of Lloyd Wright – geometric shapes throughout, ample woodwork, and strong lines. However, it’s also clear that the hand of Sullivan is nearby, and there’s a nuanced discord at times between the two styles. It’s a song and dance that is no doubt entertaining, to say the least.

Now, the Charnley-Persky Mansion – for all its differences – seems to somehow encapsulate the rich history embedded in the Gold Coast.

AT SPARROW, STEP BACK IN TIME TO A 1927 CUBAN SPEAKEASY

The historic refinement of the Gold Coast is certainly on display inside Sparrow, inspired by Chicago’s great hotel lobby bars of the past. Maybe it’s the city’s mobster history – that big Capone energy – that makes indulging at this Speakeasy-style bar feel so very right.

In fact, mere steps away is Butch McGuire’s, a pub that’s rumored to have been frequented by gangsters at the height of Prohibition. It’s been said that tunnels ran underneath, giving way to all sorts of illicit acts of trade and debauchery.

THE ATMOSPHERE AT SPARROW

That risqué feeling continues when you step inside Sparrow – an elegant take on what feels like a throwback. Quintessential dim lighting leads you towards seating that’s discreetly tucked away; it seems an unspoken agreement that all things here should be kept low-key.

Subtle botanical features catch the eye, both in the form of wallpaper and potted plants scattered throughout. The vintage picture frames and dark wood trim also contribute to a sophisticated retro aesthetic. Maintaining their cool factor, Sparrow grants you a hotel key off the wall upon arrival, knowing it will be returned once when it’s time to ‘check out’ for the evening.

ABOUT THE COCKTAILS

Despite the relaxed atmosphere, Sparrow’s Cuban-inspired cocktails are bold and charismatic, and rum is our leading lady. Specialty glasses are filled to the brim with creations to make your tongue tingle. This may just be the kiss of citrus that usually accompanies a rum spirit, but it’s more likely the lively and inventive flavor fusions. The Hotel Nacional cocktail is a cheerful concoction of pineapple rum, apricot liqueur, and lime juice, while The Floridita features maraschino, lime, and grapefruit flavors.

But standing out from the crowd (and the rest of the menu) is the Grasshopper: Sparrow rum cream, crème de cacao and crème de menthe, resulting in a stunning presentation with a generous mint garnish adorning the glass. The presentation is stylish but remains more subtle than other, more outlandish Chicago cocktail spots. Sparrow’s aesthetic aligns well with that of the Gold Coast’s – they personify refined elegance that doesn’t have to try too hard.

As Sparrow’s website touts, “We welcome all and don’t feel the need to flaunt; iconic in look and service,” we concur.

DESIGNING FOR SMALL SPACE APARTMENT LIVING IN THE GOLD COAST

We sat down with interior designer Nathan Taylor to discuss treating apartment design as an exciting opportunity to tell your story. Living in an urban neighborhood like Chicago’s Gold Coast may mean swapping square footage for stunning views and upscale amenities, but that doesn’t mean you need to skimp on style. Below are some of Nathan’s expert tips to keep in mind while designing your small space to tell your story.

Don’t be afraid to utilize art, and lots of it; stack, layer, and create groupings. In a small space, you can even take your art all the way from the floor to the ceiling, and your picture frames don’t even have to match.
If you’re a color and/or pattern lover, the bathroom is an excellent place to show that off. A large-scale wallpaper or dramatic paint color can really elevate this pace, which includes painting or wallpapering the ceiling; go for it!
Every furniture piece should have a function. Use cabinets, chests and shelving for styling as well as storage.
Utilizing mirrors does not make you a narcissist! Mirrors can really open up a small space and reflect light, while still serving their intended purpose – selfies.
Mixing vintage, new and heirloom pieces will really help a room feel curated. Again, your pieces don’t have to match. Instead, they should complement one another, and contribute to your story.
Even if you’re a minimalist, don’t be afraid to use large-scale pieces. A sculpture, statement plant, or painting can add texture without adding clutter. Utilizing floor lamps instead of table lamps also allows your accent/end tables to be mobile.
Benches, ottomans, and poofs can all act as multipurpose, moveable items that provide extra seating and possible storage.
Don’t be afraid to use large rugs! Most people purchase rugs that are too small, but sizeable rugs help to unify the space, making all pieces feel connected and the room even bigger. The smaller the space, the bigger the rug. Layering rugs is also a good option to add texture and pattern.
Consider swapping lots of small plants for one large statement plant. If opting for succulents, think about ways to display them that feel intentional: a DIY living wall or open shelving unit allows small plants to have their moment in the sun. Pun intended.
When styling art, accessories, and plants, remember to ‘pyramid and cluster’. This creates focal points while also providing negative space outside the pyramid to create moments of rest for the eye.

Designing for a small space presents a unique opportunity to hone in on pieces you really love, and focus on the story you want to tell.

CALIFORNIA COFFEE MEETS CHICAGO’S GOLD COAST

Philz – 1555 N Wells St

This San Francisco gem has quickly gained popularity in the Windy City since arriving in 2019, and their Gold Coast location is now one of five in the Chicagoland area. Just steps from the Chicago History Museum and the Lakefront path, Philz is situated between the Gold Coast and Old Town neighborhoods. There’s no need to walk up to the register and order your ‘usual’ when visiting Philz. Instead, you’re greeted by a barista who helps you arrive at your desired beverage of choice, based on your preferences. If you haven’t heard of Second City, you’ve definitely heard of someone who’s performed there.

Tina Fey, Steve Carell, and Amy Poehler are just a few of the countless celebrities who honed their comedic chops at Second City before making it big. The comedy house is also a key player in producing the new faces on Saturday Night Live every season, and a great place to catch wicked talent before they breakthrough to the big screen.

What Broadway is to New York, comedy is to Chicago; the art of theatrical comedy and improv has been perfected in this town for over 60 years.

THE HISTORY OF SECOND CITY

Co-founders of The Second City, Paul Sills and David Shepherd created what is considered modern improv at the University of Chicago in 1955. Their group was called The Compass Players, and they specialized in performing improvisational scenes that were based off loose scenarios and random plot points. The group garnered a following around town, becoming a place for patrons to enjoy non-conformist satire that went against the grain of traditional comedy at the time.

Eventually, Sills, Shepherd and their friend Bernie Sahlins formed a new group: The Second City. They managed to get a cabaret space inside an old dry cleaner’s shop on Wells Street. In 1969, they landed in their current space at 1616 N Wells. The rest, as they say, is history. The 70’s brought the all-star powerhouse marquee of Belushi, Akroyd, Radner and Murray, and there was no looking back.

What is it that makes the City of Broad Shoulders the perfect breeding ground for first-rate comedy? Bob Odenkirk, actor/writer/Second City alum (most famously known for playing Saul in “Breaking Bad”) has said “the lack of ‘industry’ helps.” More specifically, “there are no talent agents, network execs, or studio people in the audience….people are challenging themselves and their artistry first.”

Over the years, Second City has continued to expand its reach far and wide, with two other locations in Toronto and Hollywood. Here in Chicago, there are multiple headlining shows on the roster, all offering the perfect distraction from the stress of the work week.

Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience has taken up residence at Chicago’s Germania Place, and reveals a brand-new way to experience the artwork we all thought we knew (perhaps you’ve heard of ‘Starry Night’).

POST-IMPRESSIONISM AND VAN GOGH

Van Gogh was a post-impressionist painter who specialized in still life and landscape. Though the basis of this movement was steeped in subjectivity, a strong theme that weaved itself throughout work from this period was the accurate depiction of light, and the way it could illuminate the passage of time.

Post-impressionism maintained many of the motifs and subject matter of its predecessor, but it tweaked the narrative by employing unusual colors and geometric patterns. Forgoing the artistic precedent set before them (religious themes, historical scenes), the artists of the impressionist era were considered radical at the time.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE

Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience is presented through fluid, kaleidoscope-like 360° projections, 500,000 cubic feet of space is transformed into an all-encompassing sensory experience at this exhibit, which allows the participant to feel as though they’re quite literally stepping into a large-scale Van Gogh painting.

Set to a soundtrack that straddles the line between classical and contemporary, Italian composer Luca Longobardi’s nuanced playlist encourages a deeply personal and intimate experience.

It’s hard to deny when viewing Van Gogh’s work that a personal side of him is exposed as well; his struggles with mental health and addiction are nearly as famous as his artistic masterpieces. Composer Longobardi said, “be it the introspection he often abandons himself to or isolation in nature in order to paint it in all its power, Van Gogh is alone in his uniqueness and psychic brittleness. He’s alone with his way of thinking ahead of his time.”

For now, alone he is not – the Van Gogh Immersive Experience is currently playing in 15 cities across the world, giving thousands the opportunity to experience his work in a whole new light.

An estimated 30,000 people take to Chicago’s Lakefront Trail every single day. Whether it’s running, cycling, or just plain people-watching, there’s a multitude of activities one can enjoy along the 18.5 mile-long, uninterrupted waterfront pathway. One of the best perks of living in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood is having direct lakefront access, having the best of natural scenery and urban skyline views. Starting below Hyde Park at the South Cultural Center and stretching all the way up north to Edgewater’s Foster Beach, the Lakefront Trail is a dazzling crown jewel of our fair city. THE NAVY PIER FLYOVER PROJECT

In 2018, a project that separated the pathway into two distinct lanes for its cyclists and pedestrians was completed, easing the flow of traffic. As of this year, the Navy Pier Flyover is finally at completion. Devised as a solution to the extreme bottleneck stemming from traffic lights and congestion around Grand Avenue, the Flyover is an elevated path for walking and biking along the trail that provides a much safer and scenic alternative for visitors. More than seven years after breaking ground, we can now all enjoy the delights of outstretched arms and a 16’ wide pathway.

RECREATION ON THE LAKEFRONT TRAIL

For those looking for recreational opportunities, you can find everything from renting a bike through the Divvy app to renting a paddle board by the hour from the many beach-front vendors. In the spring and summer, the trail hosts 5k races like the Stans Donut Run and the Lincoln Park Zoo Annual Run. Looking to get your race registration covered? WASHINGTON SQUARE PARK – 901 N CLARK ST

As Chicago’s oldest existing small park, this stretch of green space is brimming with history. Designed in the 1800s to be a meeting place for community discussion, the park has fulfilled its purpose and then some. Gaining notoriety in the early 20th century, it became nationally-known as the premier destination for soapbox orators of all kinds (actors, writers, and political radicals). When the park’s fountain and other amenities were restored in the 1990s, an official memorial tablet was added to the landscape, reading ‘Chicago’s Premier Free Speech Forum’.

Today, Washington Square Park is a registered historic landmark. The grounds span almost 3 acres, and play host to stunning landscaping for community members and tourists to stroll through, or just rest and enjoy. In 1909, plans were put in place to transform Chicago’s Michigan Avenue into a major commercial boulevard.

Developers initially envisioned a thoroughfare much like the famous Champs-Èlysèes, which has often been coined ‘the most beautiful avenue in the world’. Aspiring to adjoin the ‘old’ south with the ‘new’ north of the city, the Michigan Avenue Bridge (DuSable) was built, leading to a construction boom. Both the Wrigley Building and the Tribune Tower took to the skies on Michigan Ave, with completion by 1925.

This 13-block stretch has since become a center of commercial excitement, affectionately being referred to as ‘the Magnificent Mile’, ‘Mag Mile’ for short. It feels effortless to spend an entire day shopping, dining and sightseeing right here on Michigan Avenue.

The historic Water Tower and Pumping Station sit at the northernmost end of the Mile, and are two of the only architectural structures in the entire city to endure the great Chicago fire of 1817. Across the street is Water Tower Place, our landmark shopping center. A mixed-use building for retail, business, and real estate, this 8-level structure was the first urban vertical shopping mall in the world.

Chicago’s first archbishop Patrick Feehan directed this beautiful historic estate to be constructed at State Parkway and North Avenue. Consisting of three levels, the second floor is primarily utilized as a private living domain for the acting archbishop. On the grounds lives a red carriage house, which provides living quarters for the nuns who look after the mansion. The Residence showcases many tell-tale characteristics of the ‘Queen Anne’ style of architecture with its asymmetrical facade, front-facing gable, and a prominent polygonal tower. It is also home to a myriad of fireplaces, giving the mansion the charming nickname ‘the house of 19 chimneys’. Behind the home, there is even an alley paved with wooden blocks; a rare sight in 21st century Chicago. With a zip code in the Gold Coast, this property currently has an appraised value of over 14 million dollars. Given that this is still an occupied and private residence, there are no indoor tours available. However, one can easily admire the stunning and historic facade of this iconic building while out strolling the neighborhood.

That might sound like a tricky combination to pull off, but with a visionary like Wright (and his partner, nicknamed the ‘father of modernism’) at the helm, something remarkable was always bound for this address; the mansion is now known as a pivotal work of modern American architecture. A visit to the Charnley-Persky Museum is like witnessing global history in action – the world of architecture as we know it was changed from that moment on, right here in the Gold Coast. “Slice into a deep-dish pizza and your knife sinks through layers of meat and vegetables, thin tomato sauce, dense mozzarella cheese and finally, a resistant cracker-like crust. The cake-like pan is first coated in olive oil, then topped with a white and semolina flour dough mixture, which gets pressed against the deep pan’s round bottom and edges. The olive oil slightly fries the dough during the baking process, giving it a distinct golden crunch. Before hitting the oven, a layer of sliced mozzarella is covered with vegetables and meats, typically Italian sausage, then topped with a sweet layer of crushed tomatoes.
